Resolution are a community of family justice professionals whose campaigning led to “no fault divorce” becoming a law in 2022.
Resolution’s next main focus is to change the law so that there are more rights for unmarried couples – currently there are none in the event of a relationship breaking down.
While we had strong data that showed one in three unammaried couples fear homelessness or being forced to rely on bennefits if their relationship ended we new that in order to bring the sotry to life ansd to genuinely move the conversation along, there would have to be someone who could talk first hand about the catastrophic consequences of not being married to their partner when the relationship broke down.
Eventually we were put in touch with Charlotte who had been with her partner for over 17 years. She was encouraged not to work or put her name on assets such as the family home. When they separated, Charlotte was left totally penniless, and faced legal bills that would amount to £150,000 for taking her partner to court. Becuase Charlotte was in the midst of an ongoing litagation against her former partner our role was not merely to secure coverage for the campaign but to also provide anonymity for Charlotte and ensure there was no risk of media interviews jepordising her live case.
